The truth is, there's no one-size-fits-all answer.
Some people want to be able to walk to the train. Others don't mind a short drive if it means getting a little more house for their money. It really comes down to your budget, your lifestyle, and how often you're heading into the city.
Here are a few Morris County towns I'd suggest putting on your list.
Morristown
If you like having restaurants, coffee shops, and things to do within walking distance, Morristown is hard to beat.
The train station offers direct service to New York Penn Station, which makes commuting pretty straightforward. On weekends, the downtown stays busy with local events, great food, and plenty of places to meet up with friends.
The tradeoff? Because it's such a popular town, home prices are often on the higher side compared to some nearby communities.
Madison
Madison has a quieter, small-town feel while still giving you convenient train access into Manhattan.
The downtown isn't huge, but that's part of its charm. You'll find local restaurants, small businesses, and neighborhoods that feel established and welcoming.
If you're looking for a slower pace without feeling isolated, Madison is definitely worth exploring.
Chatham
Chatham is one of those towns people often fall in love with after spending just a few hours there.
The neighborhoods are beautiful, the downtown is easy to walk around, and the train ride into the city is a big reason many buyers choose it.
The downside is that homes here can be more expensive, so it may not fit every budget. But if it's within your price range, it's easy to see why it's so popular.
Denville
Denville gives you a little more flexibility.

Compared to some of the towns closer to the city, you may find more space for your money here.
Dover

Honestly, the "best" commuter town is the one that fits your life.
If you love being able to walk to restaurants after work, Morristown might be your spot. If you're looking for a quieter neighborhood, Madison or Chatham could be a better fit. If getting more space for your budget is important, Denville and Dover deserve a closer look.
One piece of advice I always give buyers is this: don't choose a town based only on the commute. Visit it on a Saturday morning. Grab a coffee. Walk around downtown. Drive through a few neighborhoods. You might be surprised by which place feels like home.
At the end of the day, you're not just buying a house—you're choosing the community you'll come home to every day. Taking a little extra time to explore can make all the difference.
Local Tip: If you'll be commuting to NYC only two or three days a week, don't automatically rule out towns that are 10–15 minutes farther from the train. That extra drive can sometimes mean more home, a larger yard, or a lower price compared to towns with stations right in the center.
